Doherty Infectious Disease Prevention

Strategic Partnership for prevention, surveillance and response to Infectious Diseases across the Indo-Pacific region

Staff working on the Anti-microbial Resistance Program COMBAT-AMR

As part of the Partnerships for a Healthy Region initiative, established by The Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s (DFAT) Centre for Health Security, the Doherty Institute is targeting five priority work areas in the Pacific to improve laboratory diagnosis and surveillance, pathogen genomic surveillance, antimicrobial resistance prevention and response, and use of data for decision making.

AVI’s partnership with Doherty builds on its successful work to address the threat of antimicrobial resistance in Pacific Island countries through its 2.5-year COMBAT-AMR program.

AVI is proud to continue its association with the Doherty Institute, providing the in-country ethical recruitment service that supports local engagement, employment and support to Doherty and the strategic partnership.

As a key delivery partner, AVI supports the Doherty Institute to:

  • Recruit and contract locally engaged staff in Fiji and Samoa.

The program has five priorities:

Building resilience to infectious diseases globally through genomics (BRIDGe)
The development of genomic surveillance strategies, building capacity in laboratories and public health stakeholders, improve utilisation and integration of data, and enhanced networking and coordination across the region that supports equitable access.

Combating the threat of antimicrobial resistance across the Asia-Pacific (COMBAT-AMR)
Continuing to address AMR and foster regional collaboration through; infection prevention and control, antimicrobial stewardship, laboratory diagnosis and surveillance using a people centred framework across human and animal health settings.

Enhancing laboratory accuracy and biosafety for outbreak response in the Asia-Pacific through education (eLABorate)
Strengthening laboratory capacity and systems for infectious diseases diagnosis, achieved through technical training to expand in-country testing capabilities, quality assurance and management.

Hepatitis B integration into Triple Elimination (HIT3)
Providing technical support for incorporating hepatitis B prevention into programs for the Triple Elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis and hepatitis B through development, implementation, and evaluation of programs to enhance vaccination, diagnosis, and treatment.

Supporting preparedness in the Asia-Pacific region through knowledge, learning and engagement (SPARKLE)
Developing capacity in the analysis and interpretation of data that informs policy and practice for infectious diseases control. This includes tools and frameworks, such as health and economic models, focussing on a One Health approach.
