History

The Australian Sports Trainers Association was established in Victoria in the early 1980s. The National body was established in 1984 as a Company Limited by Guarantee. In the same year ASTA Victoria became a statutory entity when it was registered as an incorporated association under the Victorian Associations Act. The Australian Sports Trainers Association (ASTA) Victoria Incorporated [AVI] thereby became responsible under its charter for the total oversight of its own affairs. AVI's progressive stance, particularly in recent years, has seen it recognised in Victoria (as well as outside the state) as the voice of the "grassroots" Sports Trainer.

AVI has, for many years, been able offer to its members the opportunity to practice their skills in the field through its "Coverage of Sporting Events" program. Many AVI Sports Trainers have had the opportunity to cover a diverse range of sporting activity including hockey, swimming, diving, athletics, football (Australian Football, Rugby League and Union), soccer, cricket, lacrosse netball, basketball, baseball and softball. As more and more sporting organisations experience the skill and expertise of its Sports Trainers, AVI is becoming involved with a wider range of sports.

In the educational sphere, ASTA Victoria pioneered the trialling and introduction of the first Level 1 Sports Trainer to be given National accreditation by the Australian National Training Authority. AVI sees that its conduct of Sports Trainer courses and reaccreditations is imperative to maintain its historic role as the voice of the grassroots Trainer. Members are given the opportunity to update their skills on a regular basis, and a continuing education program is offered to all members each year. Specialist speakers, leaders in their fields, deliver this most important continuing education program

Vision and Mission Statement

The Australian Sports Trainers Association Victoria Incorporated is a progressive not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing safety in sport, as well as top quality initial care of sports injuries. It also seeks to aid in appropriate conditioning for sporting activity, as well as assisting in the rehabilitation of sporting injuries.

Since its origins ASTA Victoria Incorporated has seen as crucial to its mission that all Sports Trainers have competent current skills and sound background knowledge in those areas of Sports Medicine that are properly their domain. It has endorsed a number of nationally accredited education courses that fulfil those aims. It is at the very grassroots community level that ASTA Victoria has gained credibility as a leading organisation in the provision of safer sporting outcomes for junior and senior participants.

AVI has also advocated that Sports Trainers should have a voice in those issues that impinge on their operation in the field of Australian sport. AVI believes that appropriate educational offerings will enhance the status of Sports Trainers as individuals and as well as true professionals. It has lent its support to the establishment of the first course accredited through the Australian TAFE system which includes the title Sports Trainer. That course is the Certificate in Sports Trainer/Athletic Therapist Level 1. It has been offered through the Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE. In addition, the Australian Rugby League First Aid Officers'/Sports Trainers' Course, Level 1 has been endorsed through ASTA Victoria. That course was the first Sports Trainer course to gain accreditation through the Australian National Training Authority. Many Victorian Sports Trainers have gained their accreditation through AVI and the ARL Level 1 course. These numbers continue to grow, as does the good camaraderie amongst the course graduates.

AVI is committed to supporting the National training frameworks to ensure career pathways are developed for the Sports Trainer. It is in the process of developing continuing educational and appropriate professional development opportunities for its Sports Trainer members.

At this time ASTA Victoria Incorporated is experiencing discernible major growth. It is now recognised within Victoria, and, in a number of areas in the National sphere, as one of the important players in the sporting scene. Strategic planning, teamwork, and an informed, disciplined and loyal membership has ensured that AVI has consolidated its position, and will grow increasingly stronger within Victorian and Australian sport beginning from the grassroots level and continuing through to the elite levels.
